Austral Fisheries Excursion

Austral Fisheries is one of Australia’s largest integrated commercial fishing companies with interest in both deep sea fishing and at sea prawning. They are proud to be recognised for their responsible fishing practices and continue to invest in sustainability.

Shoreline trainees were lucky enough to spend a day at Austral Fisheries in Cairns where they were taken on a guided tour of the operations. Trainees all commented how valuable the experience was, giving them another example of a commercial operation in which their studies could be tailored towards.

The highlight for the trainees was being showed a large bycatch reduction system. The system creates pockets for fish etc to rest and return to the ocean when they are ready, the system is designed to successfully release all by catch into the wild, only targeting prawns in this case. The trainees were walked through the engineering aspects of the process and all showed a keen interest and asked some great questions.

It was a really engaging day and something that was extremely beneficial to all that attended.

A big thank you to Austral Fisheries and Clayton Nelson for allowing Shoreline trainees to attend.
